What is Botox?

Neuromodulators, also known as botulinum toxin, are products used to weaken facial muscles causing wrinkles, thus rejuvenating the face.

A botulinum toxin injection will weaken facial muscles within a few days with maximal effect at two weeks, and a duration of action of 3-4 months.

Four products are available on the market, and their commercial names are often (and wrongfully) used interchangeably with botulinum toxin or neuromodulators. The commercial names available in Canada are Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Nuceiva.

What are the main reasons to receive botulinum toxin injections to the face?

The most common cosmetic indications for botulinum toxin are the elimination of wrinkles at the level of the forehead, glabellar region, and crow’s feet.

Other less common esthetic indications are injections around the mouth and at the level of the neck.

Dr. Moubayed also performs medical botulinum toxin injections for patients suffering from hyperkinetic facial paralysis and salivary problems.

Are botulinum toxin injections safe?

Botulinum toxin injections are probably the safest cosmetic procedure performed by Dr. Moubayed. After the disappearance of the effect of the medication three to four months later, there are no permanent or residual effects of botulinum toxin in your body.

However, like any injection, the most common risks are minimal pain at the site of injection, bruising, and temporary redness. Sometimes, certain patients can suffer from a slight headache the same or next day, and certain patients can have residual movements or asymmetries requiring touch-ups.

Rarely, certain patients can have an infection, a droopy eyelid, nausea, or dry eyes. However, all of these risks are temporary. Finally, extremely rare, certain patients can develop antibodies rendering further injections inefficient, or have an anaphylactic allergic reaction.

What is preventative botulinum toxin?

It is not necessary to have visible wrinkles to receive botulinum toxin injections.

Certain patients opt for a lower dose of botulinum toxin to weaken the facial muscles at risk of eventually producing wrinkles. With repeated injections, these muscles become smaller and weaker, and have less of a tendency to produce wrinkles on the long-term.
