What are lip injections?

Lip injections are most commonly performed using a dermal filler. The most commonly used product is hyaluronic acid, which is a natural sugar that already exists in your body. When it is injected in synthetic form, it usually lasts around 4-6 months in the lips.

Can you inject Botox in the lips?

“Botox” is a brand name for a neuromodulator, botulinum toxin. We sometimes can inject small doses of neuromodulator in the lips to help with smokers lines, upturn the oral commissure, help with gummy smile, and treat facial paralysis. However, by far, the most commonly injected product in the lips is hyaluronic acid.

What happens during a consultation for lip injections?

A consultation starts with a complete history and physical examination. Photos are taken to be able to compare them to your “after” photos.

Then, we talk about the injection procedure and how to keep bruising down, and Dr. Moubayed answers any and all questions you may have.

How to prepare for a consultation for lip injections?

It is a good idea to prepare yourself for your consultation.

First, prepare in order of importance the elements you would like to improve in your lips.

If you have had fillers in the past, try to find out which products were injected and when. If you have already had lip surgery, try to bring with you the operative report of your prior procedures if this is possible.

What type of anesthesia is used for lip injections?

Lip augmentation using fillers is practiced using either numbing cream, or a local anesthesia called “lip blocks” where the doctor will numb your upper and lower lips completely using small injections of anesthetic.

How are lip fillers performed?

Dr. Moubayed will use sterile technique and a very small needle to increase the volume of the lips in the areas that need it, according to your specific anatomy. See the third slide below to witness lip filler technique.

How long does swelling last after lip fillers?

After your filler procedure, the lips will often swell significantly during the first 3-4 days, usually more than your desired result. They will settle into their desired shape within the first 2 weeks. Tricks to keep the swelling down are to sleep with at least 2 or 3 pillows, and apply an ice pack that we will provide you.

Is there a more permanent alternative to lip injections?

A lip lift is a permanent and irreversible surgical procedure to increase the size of the upper red lip and decreases the distance between the red lip and the nose. Read more about this here.
