What are the main causes of difficulty breathing through the nose?
The main causes of difficulty breathing through the nose are:
1. deviated septum
2. nasal valve collapse
3. nasal turbinate hypertrophy
5. nasal polyps
6. nasal tumors
7. adenoid tissue
What is the difference between septoplasty, rhinoplasty, and septorhinoplasty?
Septoplasty is surgery on the nasal septum performed on patients with difficulty breathing due to a deviated septum.
Rhinoplasty is can be cosmetic or functional. Cosmetic rhinoplasty is surgery to change the shape of the nose.
Functional rhinoplasty is also sometimes called septorhinoplasty. It is surgery to correct nasal breathing when the obstruction is at the level of the nasal valves.
Some people also use the word “septorhinoplasty” when any cosmetic surgery is combined to any breathing surgery on the nose.
A proper consultation is absolutely necessary to identify if you need one or more of these procedures.

How do you take care of patients with trouble breathing through their nose?
The management of your nasal obstruction starts with a referral from your doctor to see Dr. Moubayed. The day of consultation, in addition to evaluating your past medical history, you will be questioned on all causes that can create nasal problems, such as (but not limited to): trauma, acute or chronic sinusitis, allergies, inflammatory disease, or medication side effects, among others. Your nose will be examined in a complete fashion including an examination of your septum, nasal valves, turbinates, as well as a nasal endoscopy. You will fill out multiple standardized questionnaires that can compare you to the general population and follow your progress over time. Finally, it is possible that Dr. Moubayed sends you for further testing such a sinus CT scan or allergy testing.
Dr. Moubayed performs the complete spectrum of procedures to improve nasal breathing, which include turbinate reduction, septoplasty, functional rhinoplasty (surgery at the level of the nasal valves). Sometimes, in cases that have been previously operated, cartilage grafts from your ear or your rib can be necessary to fix your breathing.
